Before he became famous for his classic full length studio albums, Eminem was known for something much different, his sharp freestyle game. Whether it be a completely unrehearsed, off the top freestyle, or a previously written freestyle verse, he was at the top of the game.

Honing his skills in freestyle rap battles such as The Rap Olympics and Scribble Jam, he became a force to be reckoned with on the microphone, whether it be in lyrical combat or a friendly cypher.

In 1997 he entered the 2nd annual Scribble Jam competition in Cincinnati, OH and made it to the semi-finals before being defeated by Rhymefest. After Rhymefest no-showed for the finals against Juice, Eminem was brought back into the competition for a 3-way battle with Juice & Dos One. Juice prevailed and won the entire event.

As well as the previously mentioned freestyle rap battle competitions, he was well known for appearing on local and nationally syndicated radio shows such as the world famous Wake Up Show. It was here that Dr. Dre heard Eminem for the first time and immediately wanted to meet him.

Appearing alongside such acts as The Notorious B.I.G., Planet Asia, Akinyele and others, he quickly rose through the ranks as a fan favorite on the show, earning himself a spot on one of the Wake Up Shows famous collaberation songs.

Even after blowing up and becoming the massive success he is today, he still releases new freestyles over industry beats. For example, his 'Love Me' freestyle from a Kay Slay mixtape over labelmate Obie Trice's beat.

Thanks, nice read. Eminem is one of the best (if not the best already) in my opinion. Freestyling is a serious tool for an aspiring rapper to consider. His verse and Chino XL's on the Wake-Up show music video are my favorites.
